Never happier than when he got his very own copy…

Last week I noticed some political signs going up along the street in town. Same names, different year.  And I said to the husband, “Is there a vote coming up?”

“Yes,” he says…next year is the presidential election.”

“Really?  Already?”

I know next to nothing about politics and I’m not afraid to say so.  I don’t get into political conversations with people because really, I’d sound like an idiot.  Let those who know their stuff handle the government, I say. And maybe that’s ignorant.  Maybe it’s people like me who are running our country into the ground because we don’t get involved. We don’t do our part.

A little secret…I’ve never even registered to vote. I know…I know…shame on me and all that.  (I expect some chastising comments on that one…bring it on.)

But I’m a believer in the fact that it takes all kinds to make the world go around and not all of us can  know everything.  Not all of us can run the zoo and maybe that 80’s band Tears For Fears was wrong and everybody does NOT want to rule the world.

Because really…I enjoy my tiny, sheltered existence and I love that my only exposure to the outside world, most days, is Facebook.  I love that World War Three could start and I’d be the last to know. (It hasn’t right?)  I’m okay with the fact that my entire basis of knowledge on how our country works comes from the old School House Rock songs…I’m Only A Bill…and from my ten year old future congressman son.  If I need to know something, I just ask Anthony, and he fills me in.  Truth?  I don’t even know what a congressman does.  The only reason I have the local Mayor on my Facebook is because he invited me.  I don’t know what a mayor does and frankly…I don’t really want to.  My plate is full, thank you very much.

I rarely read the news…because who wants to be depressed?  And I sometimes wonder if the only reason many DO read or watch the news is so they can feel like they have something important to say.  “Did you read about that Iran thing this morning…” sounds much more impressive in idle chitchat than “SO who’s president these days, anyway…?”

I’m not saying it’s right for everyone…some of you need to know about this stuff or the world would be utter anarchy.  But there are a few of us out here…or maybe not and I’m in this rocking boat all alone…who just want to trust in our fellow man and assume he/she knows what they are doing.  I trust in others…those faithful servants who choose to protect my land and decide right from left…and hope they know what the heck they’re doing.

And when Anthony runs for government office someday…and he will, of that I am sure…no doubt this blog post will come back to haunt me and we’ll all read about it in the news.  Well, I won’t…because I’ll be snugly wrapped in my own ignorance in the backwoods of the world.

Right where I can do the most good…or maybe just the least amount of damage.

(If you’ve not read about Anthony yet…you’re in for a treat.  Read HERE)
